Creating smokey eyes: what do you need?
Many stars walk the red carpet with beautiful smokey eyes, but how do you apply eye makeup perfectly without the help of a makeup artist? Fortunately, the experts at Herome know what to do! We start with an overview of the essentials. To create the Smokey Eyes look, you need the following makeup:
- Eyeliner or eye pencil
- Smokey eyes colors: 3 shades of eyeshadow of the same color, think black, gray, or brown.

Smokey Eyes step-by-step plan
Step 1. The right smokey eyes makeup color
Perfect smokey eyes are created by a transition of colors. To do this, we work from light to dark. This is why you need three shades of the same matching eyeshadow color. With these, we create a color gradient where the rule applies: the closer to the eye, the darker the color and/or the heavier the coverage of the eyeshadow.
Ideal smokey eye colors include: light gray, dark gray, black, or light brown and dark brown. You can also choose the same color but with different coverage. Naturally, smokey eye colors are seen primarily in black or gray shades. You can also choose to work with dark brown, which is less harsh. Of course, the technique below can also be applied with a completely different color! The result can also be stunning with, for example, a gradient in green shades, blue, or red with pink!
Step 2. The first smokey eye color
The result you want to achieve is a gradient of colors. For that reason, we start by laying the base, and we do this with the lightest shade of smokey eyeshadow. Take your brush and carefully apply a thin layer under your eyebrow. Blend this outwards towards your eyelid, following the width of your eyebrow.
Step 2.1. Apply the middle color to your eyelid crease.
Using the middle smokey eye color, fill in the center of your eyelid. Continue where you left off with the first color. The crease of your eyelid is the perfect place to start.
Step 3. Final shade and blend!
Using the darkest color, fill in the final section: the part just above your lashes. The closer to the lashes, the darker the color. Now that all the shades are applied, you can use a brush to touch everything up and blend the color transitions so that everything flows together nicely. Lightly blend the smokey eye colors, but be careful not to change the intensity: going upwards from a heavy shade to a lighter color.
Step 4. A line above your lash line
Draw a line above your lash line, thickening towards your outer corners. Instead of eyeliner, you can also use an eye pencil for this. For a smokey eye, a dark color is most suitable, such as black, gray, or dark brown.
Step 5.Finishing touch: Mascara
The only thing left to do is shape your lashes. Because you have applied a lot of eyeshadow, your lashes need a little extra to stand out.
